Symptoms
A person experiencing paranoid schizophrenia is victim to many potentially harmful symptoms. The symptoms are described as either positive or negative (Positive being added and negative being when a characteristic becomes less apparent). While no patient is the same there are similarities. They usually exhibit auditory hallucinations and will also be preoccupied with a few delusions. These hallucinations can be voices in the patients head that may influence decisions and even spark delusions. There are four types of delusions.
Delusions of Control - This type of delusion is specific to paranoid schizophrenia. The person believes that they are being controlled by someone or something else and have little or no control over their life.
Delusions of Grandeur - When the suffering from this the person thinks that they are connected to famous people. When this is extreme it can indicate that they are in the worst stage of this mental disorder.
Delusions of Persecution - This is when the sufferer believes that others are out to get them. Commonly they believe that co-workers or the government are working in collusion or conspiring against them and causes the patient to be very suspicious and distrustful. This is the most evident symptom.
Delusions of Reference - Similar to delusions of grandeur the person believes that they are responsible for a major event that is usually negative and their fault.
Another symptom that a paranoid schizophrenic will exhibit is social withdrawal. The patient will become reclusive and, at times, put much effort into avoiding contact with others and leaving their house.
